Privacy

How TheChromebooks.com handles analytics, email subscriptions, and the small amount of data stored in your browser.

TheChromebooks.com is an independent publication. This page explains what data the site collects, why, and how you can control it. No account is required to read anything here.

What this site collects

Analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand which articles are useful and how people find them. It records aggregated information such as page views, approximate location (city level), device type, referral source, and browser. We do not use it to identify individual readers.

Theme preference. Your light/dark choice is saved in your browser’s local storage under the key tcb-theme. It never leaves your device, and clearing site data removes it.

Search. The search box runs entirely in your browser against a static JSON index. Search terms are not sent to a server or logged.

Newsletter

If you subscribe to the newsletter, the email address you enter is sent to Buttondown, our email service provider. Buttondown processes the address on our behalf and stores subscription records, including the date of consent and delivery history.

  • Subscriptions use double opt-in: you must confirm by email before you are added to the list.
  • Every issue includes a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can also email us to be removed.
  • We never sell, rent, or share subscriber addresses with advertisers.
  • The subscribe form does not load until you visit a page containing it, and it does not set advertising cookies.

Our lawful basis for processing subscriber email addresses is consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing.

Third parties

  • Google Analytics for aggregate traffic measurement.
  • Buttondown for newsletter delivery, only if you subscribe.
  • GitHub Pages hosts the site and may keep standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security and abuse prevention.

Embedded media, such as YouTube videos, may set cookies from the relevant provider once you play them. We do not control those cookies.

Your choices

  • Block or delete analytics cookies in your browser; the site still works.
  • Unsubscribe from any newsletter email, or ask us to delete your subscriber record.
  • Request a copy of the subscription data we hold about you.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, we will note the update on this page. The current version applies from the date shown below.
